Finger Anomaly
Medical anomalies of the finger
Health issues pertaining to fingers are extremely common, especially when our fingers are one of the most used appendages on our body. These finger related health problems come in many forms, from a simple fracture to being born with additional fingers on one or both hands.
Below are a number of health problems related to all the fingers:
Polydactyly- A person or animal that was born with more than the normal amount of fingers on their hands (or feet/toes).
Hypodactyly – Having too few fingers (digits) at birth
Didactyly – Having two fingers on each limb. In humans this is typically used to reference an abnormality in which the middle fingers (index finger, ring finger, middle finger) are missing and only the thumb and pinky remain.
Syndactyly – An unusual condition where two or more digits are fused together
Ectrodactyly – Congenial absence of one or more fingers (sometimes due to missing finger bones)
Macrodactyly – Having an enlarged finger in comparison to other digits/fingers
